This post is not suitable for newly qualified Nurses
The Emergency Department (ED) at The Whittington Hospital is looking for Band 6 Senior Staff nurses to join our progressive and dynamic team. The Whittington (ED) serves the diverse local community of North London in and around Archway and Highgate. We are a busy but very friendly central London ED, seeing nearly 100,000 patients per year.
The Emergency Department has a co-located Urgent Care Centre, a Clinical Decision Unit and a dedicated Children’s Emergency Department.
Recently we opened a new Rapid Assessment area at the front door of the Emergency Department in order to support new ways of working in the approach to initial assessment. We are a designated Trauma Unit, as part of the North East London and Essex Trauma Network
Our mission is “Helping local people live longer, healthier lives”. The Trust is committed and striving to deliver seven day services across the organisation.
Our recent CQC inspection, in December 2015, praised the training and development opportunities for nurses, as well as our outstanding work in protecting patients from abuse. We provide high quality emergency care and maintain an above average performance for initial assessment, ambulance handovers and four-hour performance
We have very strong nursing leadership and can offer support from our substantial senior team, which includes our two ED Matrons and two Paediatric Lead Nurses, who provide a clinical support rota as well as Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) who provide support on a shift by shift basis. We also have a dedicated and innovative Practice Development Nurse, devoted purely to the development of the nursing team.
You will be given the opportunity to rotate through all areas of the department including developing your skills in minor injury in our Urgent Care Centre with support of the ENPs, our 4 bedded Resuscitation Room where we care for critically ill medical or trauma patients, Majors where we assess the majority of ambulance patients, the Clinical Decision Unit ward area and Paediatrics where you will gain knowledge and skills under the supervision of our great team of Paediatric nurses. In April 2014 our ambulatory care moved into a new purpose built £3M unit which is pioneering new pathways and working to reduce admissions and support patients to stay at home
Due to internal promotions we are pleased to have vacancies for Senior Staff Nurses in our Emergency Department. We are renowned for our positive culture and commitment to patient safety and we are looking for the best staff to continue achieving these high standards. If you’re passionate about delivering excellent nursing care and looking to work as part of a dynamic team then we’re looking for you
The Senior Staff Nurse is a highly skilled practitioner who is able to work as the senior nurse in all areas of the department. They will also be expected to develop competencies under supervision of a senior nurse as part of a development programme to progress to Junior Sister / Charge Nurse.
You would be supported by a tailored development plan and competencies to succeed in your new role. Nurses at the Whittington can expect to be well supported, with a dedicated Practice Development Nurse, two ED Matrons working a clinical rota and Lead Nurses for UCC and Paediatric ED.
The Whittington also has excellent higher education opportunities for staff. We regularly offer places on ILS, ALS, ATNC, APLS & Physical Assessment or ENP courses. In addition we run our own in-house ED course, which can be accredited at BSc or Masters Level. To support your leadership development, the Trust offers many in-house courses as well as external accredited courses with the Institute of Leadership & Management, and NHS Leadership Academy.
Applicants will have demonstrable experience of working in all areas of ED and ideally have successfully completed a preparation for mentorship programme. All records of courses attended or competencies achieved must be brought to interview.
Post holders will be part of the team rota and be expected to work in rotation onto nights and weekends on a four-week rota basis. Flexible working will be considered as part of the trust values.
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
