Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our renowned Colposcopy department at Whittington Health.   The post holder will be supported in their role to become and accredited nurse colposcopist.   The post holder should be a highly motivated, keen to learn and a good team player with good communication skills

There will be the opportunity for continued professional development, teaching and the support of the wider Colpsocopy team through a structured programme of training.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the colposcopy in the outpatient setting with a view to undertaking nurse Colposcopy training and achieving accreditation.
  • To have a gynaecology experience and knowledge in the clinical setting. To assist in all areas of gynaecology womens health as required.
  • To have completed Womens Health Cervical Screening Course
  • To ensure a high quality of service is met with adherence to national safety standards.
  • To refer patients to other clinicians as appropriate and seek consultant advice as necessary. Escalate any concerns to lead consultant / service manager.
  • To work in collaboration with members of the MDT and gynaecological team.
  • To attend MDT meetings regularly.
  • To adhere to professional guidelines, develop and follow local policy and adhere to patient pathways.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support the colposcopy in the outpatient setting with a view to undertaking nurse Colposcopy training.

  • To provide counselling and support to women undergoing colposcopy investigation/treatment.

 

  • To contribute and develop nurse led protocols and guidelines.

 

  • To ensure all necessary equipment is available for each clinic.

 

 

  • To be responsible for safe use of medical devices and equipment and liaise with manager to ensure service and maintenance of equipment.

 

 

  • To observe for patient complications pre, post and during procedure and act

accordingly to maintain patient safety. 

 

  • To maintain confidentiality at all times and comply with trust information governance policy.

 

  • To liaise and communicate patient results via patient pathway to ensure clinical care is given effectively.

 

  • To promote health education and ensure patients have relevant information for them to make an informed choice.

 

  • To be a direct resource/ link for the hysteroscopy service. To be an expert resource for medical and nursing staff

 

  • To maintain accurate records and ensure nursing documentation complete within NMC and trust guidelines

 

  • To be involved in the admission process for both emergency and elective surgery within the colposcopy service.

 

  • To comply with infection control policies within the department.

 

  • To act as a role model for nursing staff within the gynaecology team and support unit manager/ matron.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Nurse
  • • Mentorship / Teaching or equivalent
  • • Relevant professional clinical qualification and post registration course
Desirable criteria
  • Qualified to Degree level
  • Womens Health Course/ Experience

Skills & Abilities

  • • Womens Health clinical experience and skills
  • • Good interpersonal, communication, written and verbal skills
  • • Ability to identify and work towards improvements
  • • Excellent problem solving skills
  • • Demonstrates excellent organisational and prioritisation skills
  • • Knowledge of COSHH procedures and risk management.
Desirable criteria
  • • Competent in various IT/ software systems.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience in womens health/ colposcopy
  • • Knowledge of gynaecological conditions and management of conditions
  • • Demonstrates awareness of national standards of care within colposcopy and experience of QA inspection and preparation.
  • • Knowledge of clinical governance within Gynaecology Nursing
